John Steinbeck’s, Of Mice and Men, is a novel considered to be one of the classics, read by many high school students around the world. This story of friendship captures the time period, teaches an important lesson about existence, and explains the tough reality in which the strong triumph over the weak. (Shuman ed. 1450) John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. was born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902 to John Ernst Steinbeck and former schoolteacher Olive Hamilton Steinbeck. He was the only son and third of the four children. His interest in writing grew out of his fascination with reading. One of his favorite books was Sir Thomas Mallory’s Le Morte d’Arthur, which his mother introduced to him. (Baird ed. 1446) He decided to become an author in his early teenage years and had few deviations from that path.
