How does Shakespeare build on the Supernatural theme? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Before a word has been spoken, Shakespeare starts developing the idea of the supernatural. This supernatural theme is introduced by thunder and lightning as the witches enter the stage, in the first scene. This starts conveying the idea that the witches are evil, which Shakespeare associates to the supernatural. Shakespeare builds this main theme using imagery and language. Perhaps the main image, which he uses frequently, is of the witches. The witches represent evil, in physical form. However, commonly unnoticed is when Duncan demonstrates the supernatural power of foreseeing the future, showing that the supernatural are not all evil. But Shakespeare obviously builds on the evil side more because the play is a tragedy. The witches, whom play a vital role in the plot to the play, show obvious signs of being supernatural. Shakespeare uses the witches as an image of evil, and by developing the idea that they are supernatural, he emphasises their evil and builds on the theme of the supernatural.
