William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The life of William Sydney Porter, better known as O. Henry, was much like the stories that he wrote: interesting, full of excitement, with many twists along the way. He was born on September 11, 1863, in Greensboro, North Carolina to Dr. Algernon Sydney and Mary Jane Virginia Swain Porter. At the age of three, William’s mother died from tuberculosis, and he and his father went to live with Algernon’s mother. Luckily for young William, his Aunt Evalina Maria Porter was an elementary school teacher that gladly tutored him. By the time he turned fifteen, William quit school and worked at his uncle’s pharmacy as the bookkeeper. Due to all the time that he spent in the pharmacy, within four years, he became a licensed pharmacist. After spending some time working with his uncle, William moved to Austin in 1884, where he met his first wife, Athol Estes, who suffered from tuberculosis. The couple had two children, a boy who died hours after being born, and a girl, Margaret.
