Government has evolved much over the decades. From the Roman Empire to the Chinese dynasties, there have been many variations on how man should set up systems to rule itself. The American democracy is the latest trend in a long history of governments. What influences caused this government to turn out this way, and how has it evolved from its early stages?
America started out as a series of colonies, most of which had their own constitutions and charters, and own ideas about how they should rule themselves. In Virginia, a government made up of three different bodies was formed, a governor, the governors council, and the House of Burgesses, which was a legislative body made up of representatives from the colony.1 Settlers arriving in Massachusetts wrote a sort of constitution which they called the Mayflower Compact. In it, the settlers wrote out that they would try to find the best way to rule themselves, and would cooperate to the best of their abilities in order to survive.2 Roger Williams founded the Rhode Island colony so that the people who fled there would live unde......
