"Civil Disobedience," an Essay by Henry David Thoreau, justifies his decision to go to jail rather than pay a poll tax that supported the Mexican War and the enforcement of slavery laws. Thoreau shows compassion in the form of respectful disagreement. The opening lines clearly explains Thoreau’s ideas 'That government is best which governs least'; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe--'That government is best which governs not at all'; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have" (Thoreau, 1). The definition of Civil Disobedience is the refusal to obey certain laws or governmental demands for the purpose of influencing legislation or government policy, characterized by the employment of such nonviolent techniques as boycotting, picketing, and nonpayment of taxes as done by Thoreau.
