The Portrayal of Native Americans in Early American Literature Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

American literature has always served as insight to the reader into the attitudes and beliefs of those whom lived in the period in which the work was written. One topic which was mentioned frequently in early American literature is that of Native Americans. From the Puritans, to Franklin, to the Transcendentalists, the opinion of the Indians changed and was reflected in works from each genre. The changing view of the Native American can be best explained by examining both the religious and social beliefs of the people whom live in the society in which the narrative was written. To the Puritans, Native Americans represented Satan and were heathens because they did not worship God nor lived the way the Puritans did. The Puritans believed they were God’s chosen people, and as such, would be the one’s that would live in Heaven with God provided they lived a pure and good life. In Rowlandson’s Narrative, Rowlandson states that “God strengthened them to be a scourge to His people” (335). She refers to the Puritans as God’s people which affirmed the belief that the Puritans ......
