America and the PURSUIT of happiness Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Langston Hughes is clearly painting a negative picture of America in his poem titled: "Let America be America again." The reader can clearly recognize this even in his second line where he writes: "I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars." Let us examine the poem in more detail and use it as a report card for America today, and more specifically let us see if the criticisms are justifiable in the context of what the founding fathers laid out in the Constitution. Though America has faults no doubt, the founders clearly laid out a vision for her of Life, Liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness. The key word, of course, is pursuit. The Constitution does not guarantee happiness, and such an ideal would be, in realistic terms, almost impossible. This paper will point out what America, though not perfect by any means, has achieved in her brief history.
