Bernard Mac Lavertys Cal focuses on the emotional torment and political victimization of the character Cal McCluskey, a young working class catholic living in a protestant housing estate in Northern Ireland during the troubles. Mac Laverty portrays a compact but grueling insight into the conflict of Northern Ireland in the 80s and by exploring such techniques like setting, characterization and plot which allows a fresh outlook to be gained into the victims of this political war providing an insight to the torture, isolation and guilt they face during this period.
Cal is set in the beautiful countryside of Northern Ireland a picturesque sight which goes unappreciated by the main character. When asked on page 117 of the book by the character Marcella,
