I will show how through characterisation, he develops this major theme and to what extent I appreciate it. · ‘The Lost Boy’ is a tragic tale on the themes of love, hate and triumph. Dave writes about his life as a child. He tells us how he was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. She no longer considered him a son, but a slave; no longer a boy, but an “It”.------ · His bed was an old army cot in the basement, his clothes were torn and smelly and when he was allowed the luxury of food it was scraps from the dog’s bowl. The outside knew nothing of the nightmare lived by David, until his school teachers started questioning him about all his cuts and bruises.
