Have you ever experience something so horrifying and painful that it causes your senses to completely shut down as a protection from further mental damages? The characters in the novel Beloved, written by Tony Morrison, all experienced the same problems as they lived through the terror of slavery. The novel takes place “during 1873 Cincinnati, Ohio; with frequent flashbacks to Sweet Home plantation in Kentucky and prison in Alfred, Georgia, in the early 1850s” (spark notes) It has as its protagonist, Sethe, a former slave and Denver, her youngest daughter, who did not live through the slavery era but still affected by it. In the story, each character takes turns narrating their part of the story and their experiences during and after the era of slavery. Morrison’s references to her characters’ senses and senses deprivation as a way to demonstrate what terrible affects slavery has on them. These characters either lose their senses temporarily or permanently reveal the true horror and dehumanization of slavery. Moreover, Morrison alluded to the color imagery and the characters’ ......
