The Theme of Vulnerability in Shakespeare’s Plays Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

William Shakespeare wrote his four tragedies during the period of 1600 to 1607 and the tragic story he writes of primarily concerns the central male character. Shakespeare depicts the troubled part of the hero’s life, which ultimately leads up to his death. It is, in fact, a tale of exceptional suffering and catastrophe, which the hero brings onto himself. This essay will address the ways in which other characters that I label as villainous affect the downfall of the protagonist. I will begin with the openings of both plays and then discuss the villainous characters in these plays. Macbeth begins with the brief appearance of three witches; they are referred to as the ‘weird sisters’ throughout the play. The mischief that they create is in a sense twofold: firstly it stems from their supernatural powers; secondly it is their understanding of Macbeth’s weaknesses and they play upon these like puppeteers.
