Developing Counselling Relationships and Skills; with particular reference to Egans's three stage model
The counselling relationship is a reflection of life itself; there is a beginning, an exploratory middle phase and a very definite end. In this essay I explore how I use key skills to navigate through these stages whilst at the same time referring to Egans three-stage theoretical model. Egans model can be summarised as the current scenario, the preferred scenario and the strategy of achieving the preferred scenario. The skills I focus on are: attending, listening and responding, in particular the reflecting, paraphrasing and summarising responses. In addition, I use my practical and/or in class experiences to demonstrate these skills. Whilst considering this essay I was struck by how self discovery for both the client and counsellor perhaps continues far beyond each individual relationship, as Jacobs states counselling is, in theory never ending, since there is always more to be learned about oneself (Jacobs, 2004: 159).
