Biomedical scientists work with doctors and nurses within the NHS to diagnose diseases, determine the effectiveness of treatment and to establish the causes and possible cures for a particular disease. Some of the conditions that are investigated are cancer, diabetes, toxicological study, blood transfusion, anaemia, meningitis, hepatitis and AIDS (www.ibms.org) Biomedical scientists are extremely important in the care of patients, as doctors use results given to them by the scientists to determine the suitable course of action to take. Therefore it is extremely important that mistakes are not made as patients may end up receiving the wrong treatment. Biomedical science, as a profession is made up of six main disciplines: medical microbiology, transfusion science, haematology, cytopathology, histopathology and clinical biochemistry.
