In The Things they Carried, Tim O’Brien sent a very clear message that while in Vietnam the soldiers always had to be aware of the enemy, but in most cases the enemy could be found inside themselves. In The Things they Carried, O’Brien detailed the things that weighed heavily on the soldiers backs both literally and symbolically. These things they carried in some cases ended up being the object of their demise. Wherever the soldiers went they could not escape the enemy. This had many consequences on them while they were in combat. Tim O’Brien shows us that he begins to work with the consequences of acts, not the acts themselves or the events, just as Katherine Porter suggested. O’Brien in a section of one of his writings entitled “How to Tell a True War Story” writes that he doesn’t tell what really happened while he was in Vietnam, but what he does write is what "should have happened" in order to bring a “feeling of reconciliation” as Ms. Porter stated. He calls this strategy "story truth". In using the “story truth”, he sets new consequences for events that don’t always......
