Many people are unaware that Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is the birth name of the well known author Lewis Carroll. Charles was born in Daresbury, Cheshire January 27th 1832. Charles came from a Northern English Family of the middle-upper class. His great grandfather was a church bishop and his grandfather was an army captain. Before Charles was even born great things were to be expected of him (Leach).
Charles was part of a large family having seven sisters and three brothers. He was taught at home for a while with the others where at age seven he was reading a list of books far beyond his age level. Finally when he was twelve his parents put him in a private school near Richmond where he was very happy. He moved to Rugby school in 1845 where he was clearly less happy, and was possibly sexually abused. After Rugby school Charles moved on to Oxford where he was sent home two days later because his mother had died of meningitis or a stroke.
