What is Descartes’ “Cogito”, and what, if anything, does it prove? In this essay i am going to try and explain what the ‘Cogito’ was and indicate my interpretation on it. Once we have a clear understanding of the ‘Cogito’, I will express my views on it and try and come up with a strong conclusion to why I think Descartes ‘cogito’ was successful and why I think it has such a strong argument. Throughout the essay I will be arguing in favour of Descartes ‘Cogito’, however, I will be looking at possible arguments against his reasoning. The ‘Cogito’ was simply a way of proving that Descartes himself existed due to the fact that for him to think he would have had to exist. The famous quote “Cogito ergo sum” simply means “I think, therefore I am” which can be interpreted as “if I think, then surely I exist”. Descartes ‘Cogito’, in my opinion seems to be a way of him breaking away from the ultimate level of doubt.
