The Origins of the Lebanese Civil War The origins of Lebanese Civil War stemming from 1975-1990 had underlying religious conflicts rising from the Ottoman Empire in 1120 to 1697. Tolerant Muslim leaders that practiced religious and social tolerance for all religions ruled the Ottoman Empire. In the Early and Later stages of the Ottoman Empire, Druze and Maronite religious groups often fought for power and influence in the region. With the determination of Fakhr Al-Din I/II, the continuous struggle for an independent Lebanon originated with the Ottoman leaders. In an attempt to thwart any more bloodshed a system of governing was set for Lebanon. The Christians would rule a portion of Lebanon, while the Druze would rule the other portion. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, France received Lebanon as part of its Mandate. Once again, tension arose between the two religious dominant groups in Lebanon, the Muslims, and the Maronite Catholics.
