Herodotus, The Father of History Herodotus was born in 484 B.C. and died in 425 BC. He was born Halicarnassus (now Bodrum, Turkey) and lived the early part of his life there up to about age 27. At about 457 B.C. he is believed to have been exiled from Halicarnassus for conspiring against Persian rule. As our knowledge of Herodotus’s life is limited, we can only assume with the information that we have that he went directly to Samos, from which he traveled throughout Asia Minor, Babylonia, Egypt, and Greece. What he did on these journeys is not known, but what is known is that he gained valuable knowledge of virtually all of the ancient Middle East. Around 447 B.C. he went to Athens, which was then the center of culture in the Greek world. There he won the admiration of most of the men in Greece including the great Athenian statesman Pericles. In 443 B.C., Herodotus settled in southern Italy in the Panhellenic colony of Thurii.
