A Partial God Wherever people exist, some kind of God must exist. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, a novel full of perfidious characters, a billboard of the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg serves as a substitute God in a land where no true God exists. Critical of his characters’ faithless actions, Fitzgerald creates the merciless eyes to remind the readers of the absence of any true God, while still having a spiritual being to control the lives of his characters. The eyes, though powerful and mystical, only possess the negative characteristics of an ideal God. As Nick is driving thorough the valley of ashes in chapter one, the eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg make their first appearance in the book. ‘The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic--their retinas are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a non-existent nose.
