Shakespeare’s plays are open to various readings that reflect any social and historical content. Discuss this statement in relation to Oliver’s Henry V (1944) and Branagh’s Henry V (1989). Henry V can be interpreted in various ways. Two such interpretations are from Kenneth Branagh and Laurence Olivier, who have each directed their own plays. They each have their own different interpretations of Henry. Branagh believes Henry is a tough but fair king whereas Olivier portrays Henry as an ideal King. Each of these interpretations are heavily influenced by their context however similar filming techniques have been used to express their differing interpretations of the play. Shakespeare presents Henry V as a king who places importance on justice and a fair trial and who does not pursue nepotism but upholds the virtue of his role as king. Branagh’s interpretation parallels this perception of Henry V but is not vulnerable to idealism as portrayed in Olivier’ production, which presents Henry as a romanticized heroic figure.
