Amanda Dodd 16 November 2006 Exam 3 Antibiotic Resistance: The War Against Bacterial Pathogens Antibiotics are an extremely important discovery in the treatment against bacterial pathogens that may invade the human body and cause multiple problems. Antibiotics are a class of antimicrobials, which are drugs that can be used against fungi, protozoa, and viruses (1-5). Antibiotics can either slow the growth of bacteria or kill bacteria. Although over 10,000 antibiotics have been isolated, only a handful have had their chemical structure determined and are thus able to be used as drugs (1-3). Antibiotics represent a wide variety of chemical compounds and structures. Originally, all antibiotics were produced using only natural products, but now can be produced through chemical modifications. These chemically modified antibiotics are known as semi-synthetic antibiotics. All organic chemical functional groups and structures are represented by antibiotics, and antibiotics contain a variety of elements including Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen (1-2,3).
