The policies of the federal government from 1865-1900 violated laissez faire to a drastic extent due to the fact that people thought major reform of among other things, railroad land grants, interstate commerce, and antitrust activities was much needed. During these progressive years numerous bills were passed and constitutional amendments were made in an attempt by the government to fix Americas many problems. The principals of laissez faire (according to document B) state that the government who governs least, governs best. It is clear that during these years the government tried to govern the United States citizens too much, going against laissez faire, and creating even more problems. However, governmental intervention to a certain extent was inevitable but they didnt know when to stop.
