Levels of Biological Organization Biological Organization explains the ongoing relationship of the Earth energy from the tiniest particle all the way through to top of the biosphere. In this paper we will describe our understanding of biological organization by comparing and contrasting different descriptions of biological organization and also explaining its purpose. In the 5th Edition text of Environment, The two authors, Peter Raven and Linda Berg, explain biological organization from the bottom to the top by starting with the lowest level. The concept can better be explained by the drawing in Figure 3-1 on page 46 of the text, which shows an elephant as the primary organism, or the subject. The concept is that the elephant is connected to the lowest form of energy on earth, which is the atom, and at the same time is connected to the highest form of energy, which is the biosphere. The steps that Raven and Berg use, starting from the atom are: atoms are organized into molecules, which are organized into cells.
