Foreshadowing is a literary device where the author laid hints or clues about what will happen in the end of the story. At the beginning of the story, these lines or events suggest a wide range of possibilities to the reader. As you read more the range narrows.
The main goal with foreshadowing is to have the readers be both surprised by the end of the story and also to find it perfectly logical. The logic of it comes from the foreshadowing, that some readers can immediately point at the hints when they finish reading and some readers can see it only at a second reading.
Foreshadowing makes the story more interesting by confusing the readers at the beginning; usually it makes the reader eager to read more until he finds the answers for the confusions at the end.
