The Tylenol Crisis We believe our first responsibility is to the doctors, nurses, and patients, to mothers and fathers and all others who use our products and services (Foster 7). The crisis management procedures used by Johnson & Johnson (J&J) during the Tylenol crisis of 1982 is one of the most influential cases seen in management today. J&J suffered a nearly $100 million dollar loss after pulling 31 million bottles of Tylenol from the market shelves. This loss came as a result of cyanide poisonings in the market place that killed seven people in the Chicago area. J&J was not responsible for this poisoning but took full responsibility to alert the public and prevent any further tragedies. The decision to do so was based on the company credo (appendix 1). As a result of its actions J&J was able to regain the market share as a respected and successful company.
