Biology Course work . When putting any type of cell into a liquid, there are three possible outcomes: 1. Mass of cell increases- if the solution surrounding the cell has higher water potential than the cell, the cell will increase in water particles and will increase in mass. By the process of osmosis the water particles will enter the cell then leave it as they are free to move across the cell membrane. 2. Mass of cell stays the same- if the solution surrounding the cell has the same water potential as the cell, then the cell will stay the same in mass. This is called the equilibrium water potential of solution and the cell. The reason why the mass of the cell stays the same is because the amount of water going out of the cell is same to the amount of water going in, so there is no change in the mass. 3. Mass of cell decreases- if the solution surrounding the cell has lower water potential than the cell, then the cell will loose mass.
