Given that a book has room for imagination, a movie will always miss certain details readers find essential. A movie script is limited to certain aspects that give the viewer a completely different perspective than a book. Therefore, most, if not all movies, are criticized for lacking scenes that in various ways were essential to fully interpret the novel as readers did. Nevertheless, a movie can’t portray all the details of a novel, and therefore tries to depict the most important scenes. The beginning scenes in the Girl with the Pearl Earring were essential to fully interpret Griet’s relationship with Vermeer and Cornelia, yet they were excluded in the movie. This basically portrays how many consider scenes essential, but for the directors these scenes were of little importance. The movie based on Girl with a Pearl Earring depicted the novel greatly, but left out two opening scenes that completed its perfection.
