By the end of the 1950s the economic hardship left by the Second World War was beginning to fade. The post-war years were more of a struggle than most people had anticipated. Many things took very long to go back normal, rationing for example went on until as late as 1954.Many people wanted society to return to how it was in the 1930's. Changes started to happen at the end of the 1950s, employment was at an all time high and with higher earnings and less income tax people were enjoying a life that had been very rare until now.More consumer goods could be afforded by the middle classes creating a better standard of living. Spending was at an all time high, household item purchases, such as washing machines, rose by 115%. As well as washing machines people bought televisions and fridges in vast numbers. This growth of consumer sales sparked a new industry in the country, advertising.
