In 1982, the U.S. Supreme Court stated during the case of Board of Education, Island Trees School District v. Pico, Local school boards may not remove books from school library shelves simply because they dislike the ideas contained in those books. Even though the U.S. Supreme Court said this, school boards, and even parents, will try anything to have a particular book removed. In America today, it seems as if students do not have the choice as to what they read. Adults make that decision instead; yet this censoring has not been an issue in the world only today. The censoring, banning, and burning of books are events that have taken place throughout history.
