The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison is about a young girl named Pecola growing up in Ohio in the 1940’s. Pecola was made an outcast by her community who stereotyped her because of her dark skin and for being poor. This contributed to her self-destruction. Pecola was certain her “ugliness” was the reason others mistreated her and she often fantasized about disappearing to end her pain. She equated blues eyes with beauty and beauty with being loved. Thus she longed for these blue eyes to replace the cruelty in her life with affection and acceptance. However, Pecolas’s parents were the most responsible for her rapid descent into madness. They failed in giving her an identity, and failed in providing her the love and security any child needs. Why didn’t Pecola see herself as being beautiful with her God-given dark skin and brown eyes? Why didn’t Pauline and Cholly let her know she was already beautiful? Why didn’t they attempt to save her?
