“Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.” The Beatles once sang about someone who lived life with a closed mind, ignoring everything around them; they may as well have been singing about Holden Caulfield from J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye. Holden prefers to take the easy route, keeping life simple and manageable. Unfortunately, the world is a chaotic, rapidly changing place that can cause confusion and complications with this ideal life. Throughout the book, Holden is forced to learn the hard way that living in fear of change and progression can only hold one back from necessary experiences, not shelter them from danger. The songs “A Line Allows Progress, a Circle Does Not” and “A New Arrangement” by Bright Eyes express feelings of depression and resistance to change in a way that relates to Holden’s character in Catcher in the Rye. Because Holden feels so nostalgic for his childhood, he refuses to move forward. Throughout the book, he describes various memories of his simpler, more innocent days.
