The Lady From the Sea Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Lady from the Sea written by Henrik Ibsen is a 19th century play weaved around the struggle people face when trying to overlook the past. As many of Ibsen’s plays, The Lady from the Sea centers on realistic concepts in order to reach out to the audience and help them relate to the action on stage. It’s a play that gives hope to its viewers, teaching them that anything is possible because the human race can learn to acclimate to its surroundings, no matter what the circumstance. The props in the play allow the audience to understand that Ellida is torn between forgetting her once lived fantasy of the sea and trying to adapt to a life on the land. The props used to engage Ellida and a past lover to the sea are two rings on a keychain thrown deep into the waters. Ellida has always been drawn to the waters; the sea is in her blood, and her mind flows like tides and currents. Her bond with the sea, however, is made stronger when a stranger with whom she falls in love with places her ring and his on a keychain and throws them into the water.
