City light in the Netherlands
Introduction:
Between 1920 and 1940, Dutch cities were introduced to traffic lights. They believed that having traffic lights would make the streets safer and would also help the flow of traffic with both cars and trains. By 1930, all of the Dutch cities had traffic lights, and the police were trained well to direct traffic in areas that did not have any traffic lights.
In the same year, the variety of traffic light systems lead to the three colors of traffic lights, which later became used nationally and internationally in a standard way.
Historiography and sources:
Clay McShane was interested in the development of the traffic lights in the United States of America, and improved it by comparing traffic flow before and after the traffic lights. He also believed that the American experience had a huge effect on the development of the traffic lights in all countries worldwide.
