Compare ‘The charge of the light brigade’ and ‘The defence of Lucknow’ by Alfred Tennyson Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Alfred Tennyson was an English poet born in Lincolnshire in 1802 and died in 1892. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and was first published in 1830. By 1850 he was sufficiently established to succeed William Wordsworth as poet laureate. Tennyson was a very patriotic and nationalist poet, which reflected in most of his poems, two of which I’m studying and comparing; ‘The charge of the light brigade’ and ‘The defence of Lucknow’ In 1854 war broke out between Russia and the ‘allies’ (who were Britain and France). The British and the French feared Russia’s ambition to take over Europe, so in September 1845, the allies landed in Crimea, southern Russia and besieged Sebastopol. This is where the charge of the light brigade took place; although it was a very courageous but foolish thing to do, it ended with disastrous consequences though, that was not portrayed in the poem. Two thirds of six hundred soldiers were killed.
