Purple Rain Riot: Civil Disobedience?
In 1989, South Africa was torn. The nation had been in a state of emergency for three months due to protests and civil unrest. This situation was brought on by South Africas method of racial segregation at the time, called Apartheid. Much like our nations segregation, non-whites were discriminated against and they were beginning to rebel against it much like our nation as well.
One such example of these protests would be a peaceful march on South Africas Parliament, four days before the South African governments elections. Unfortunately, this peaceful march turned into a riot. Thousands of followers gathered in the streets of Cape Town in an attempt to protest on the Parliament. They wanted an end to Apartheid and the ban on political gatherings. Among the group were both, whites and blacks along with Nat Tardrew, an anarchist and art teacher, who was dubbed the leader. To challenge the protestors, the police poured purple dye into their water cannons and unleashed it upon the crowd, so anyone spayed purple would be later ......
