The American Dream in Death of a Salesman Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The ‘American Dream’ is a fictitious reality that evolves in everyone’s mind. The dream is not going to be the same for everyone. It is more of an idea than a dream. Everyone longs and dreams to be the ‘perfect family’. However, the perfect family is nothing but a mere cliché. There is no perfect family; therefore, the American Dream is never completely reached. This dream was portrayed in the play “The Death of a Salesman.” “Reality peels away the thin layers of Willy Loman's American Dream; a dream built on a lifetime of poor choices and false values. (“Death”) In the play, Willy is a sales man who lives to achieve the American Dream for himself and his family. His wife, Linda, and he have two boys, Biff and Happy. Willy had very high hopes and goals of both of his sons, but mainly for Biff. He wanted Biff to be a successful sales man just as he (Willy) had dreamed of for himself.
