A Symbol of Greatness: The Grizzly Bear Bears and humans have interacted for thousands of years. The Indians used to live among them, and although they would occasionally have some conflict, they lived together peacefully. The Indians respected them, as well as all the other creatures of the forest. In this day in age, we have lost that respect. Humans have preconceived ideas that are based on stories that have been greatly exaggerated. Whenever we think of bears, we think of ferocious, man eating-machines. As Paul Schullery states, “Ferocity is probably the trait most often associated with the Grizzly. Here we are inclined to subject the bears’ behavior to our own value judgments. If ferocity means “might react violently if made to feel it or its young are threatened,” the word applies. If it means “is by nature malicious, and usually wishes to cause pain to it’s fellow creatures,” we have gone too far” (77).
