World War I was a very traumatic event for Europe for many reasons. One of those reasons is the enormous amount of casualties suffered by both the allies and the central powers. Never in history before 1914 has such massive battles taken place. During the whole conflict millions of soldiers from all the participating nations were killed. A soldiers chance of survival was limited. One of these reasons that so many people died was because of the new technology. The invention of the machine gun made it possible to kill people with minimal effort, War was turned into a savage horrific event. Also with the use of barbed wire it was much harder to maneuver the battlefield.(Macdonald 174) And finally with the addition of poison gas people were being killed before they even got a chance to get shot. All of this combined into the Trench Warfare which made successful assault on an enemy in a fixed position very difficult. The movie Gallipoli is about Trench warfare.
