Amir Jan the protagonist in Hosseini’s novel, ‘The Kite Runner’ appears to Baba as a child with no courage or self belief. His father believes that, “A boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up for anything”. Throughout their childhood, both Amir and Hassan fail to stand up for what they believe and both portray their weaknesses in several different ways. Although Hassan shows that he is able to protect other people, he does not conjure the same courage to stand up for himself. Amir however, is also given many opportunities to display his bravery, but fails to remain strong at crucial times out of fear of the consequences. Even as an adult he retains weak and selfish qualities and it is only until the end of the novel where he finds redemption in rescuing Sohrab. By doing so, he is able to prove Baba wrong that although he was a child with little courage, he has become a man who stands up for his beliefs.
