The question of the expansion of slavery is one of the main causes of the civil war. In determining whether the civil war was partially, entirely, or not at all determined by arguments for the expansion of slavery one must assess the impact the question had on society. Politically, the motion for and against the expansion brought up many laws, acts, and proposals. Geographically the North and South were pinned against each other. Socially, race was the determining factor of the quality of life one was allowed to have. Thus politically, geographically, and socially the query of the expansion of slavery partially initiated the Civil War.
The Wilmot Proviso allowed California to gain confidence in requesting to be admitted into statehood. This raised tension as to whether the state would enter as a slave state or a free state.
