Miss Brill: Get Real Katherine Mansfield’s Miss Brill is a short story about an old lady who goes to the park every Sunday to watch the band play. She loves eavesdropping on people’s conversations, and she watches them, as she puts it, as if they were “in a play”. In the story, we find out that Miss Brill is actually a lonely woman who is in need of some companionship. This story is written in third person point of view, but is told through the eyes of Miss Brill. This style of narration conveys the distorted view of reality that Miss Brill uses to cope with her loneliness. Oh, how fascinating it was! How she enjoyed it! How she love sitting here watching it all! It was exactly like a play. Who could believe that the sky at the back wasn’t painted? But it wasn’t till a little brown dog trotted solemn then slowly trotted off, like a little ‘theatre’ dog, a little dog that had been drugged, that Miss Brill discovered what it was that made it so exciting.
