“In the late 1970s and early 1980s, as many as 10,000 hemophiliacs in the United States were infected with the AIDS virus…” (Flanders 6). A genetic disorder in the blood system called hemophilia causes the failure of one’s blood to clot normally due to a deficiency of one of the clotting factors. In other words, Factor VIII, the clotting factor that hemophiliacs lack, is required by the body to clot blood fast enough so that a fatal amount of blood is not lost from a wound (Hombs 246). Hemophiliacs are treated to Factor VIII weekly in order for their bodies to quickly clot their blood. Factor VIII allows hemophiliacs to live healthier and longer lives. Although the clotting factor enhances hemophiliacs’ lives, it also exposes hemophiliacs to a deadlier disease. In the 1980s, a massive number of hemophiliacs contracted an unknown blood borne disease, AIDS, caused by the Factor VIII treatment. Because Factor VIII (made from human blood) is drawn from the blood of as many as 60,000 people, hemophiliacs run a high risk of contracting the disease. Already destined to an unfortunate l......
