Depressing Male Ideal In the present day, advertising has become essential to selling products. Advertising agencies will do anything to sell their products, including giving unrealistic impressions of male masculinity. In reality, men drink a six pack instead of having six pack abs. For advertising purposes, men are shown as completely plastic and fake ornaments. In “Beauty Re Discovers the Male Body,” agencies have reduced advertising to the degrading ‘face off’ look, ‘the rock’ or anti-average man pose and ‘the leaner’ type ads that are most appealing to women, make the onlooker think that to be happy and looked upon by others, they need to assume the appearance of a model. Advertisers often use these three types of poses, the “face off”, the “leaner”, and the “rock” to falsely abstract and mislead consumers. The ‘face off’ technique, as shown in figure 1, is one that draws the onlooker in and makes them want to be just like the model.
