This paper discusses PCB and its important history. PCB stands for polychlorinated biphenyls, an insulator used many electric companies during the twentieth century. I will include the details about PCB, and its controversial history, especially the story of one producing company, Monsanto.
Before discussing PCBâs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, Iâll describe Biphenyls. Biphenyls are two benzene rings of carbon and hydrogen. Benzene rings, which serve as the basis for gasoline and other fuels is extremely flammable. PCB has a chemical equation of C12H10-nCln, where n=1 to 10. There are 209 different possibilities or cogeners of PCB, most of these are colorless. PCB is an organic compound. When the hydrogen is replaced with chlorine it makes the molecule flame resistant. When more than one hydrogen is replaced by chlorine, it becomes a polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB.
