The novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, contains many complex symbols, many of the symbols in the book are interconnected. A symbol is an object represents an idea that is important to the novel. There are five major symbols in this novel; all Holden makes painfully clear to the reader.
Allie, Holdens young brother who died years earlier, was a main symbol throughout the story. When Holden remembers incidents from his past involving Allie, his attitude changes, such as when he writes the composition about Allies baseball glove or when Holden broke his hand after punching all of the windows after Allie died. He feels that Allie was one of the few people who were not phony in a world full of phonies. More importantly, Allie represents the innocence and childhood that Holden tries to find in his adult venturing. Holden also says that "I can't make a real fist any more-not a tight one."
