The Great Gatsby has many important themes that apply to the everyday life of North Americans. Fitzgerald proposed ideas such as love cannot be bought by money, and most importantly, wealth and greed will always lead to death and destruction. One more noteworthy concept is that the American Dream is unachievable. Not because the dream itself is an unrealistic goal but because society as a whole is corrupted.
One reoccurring theme throughout The Great Gatsby is how the problems and difficulties in the characters lives can almost always be attributed to wealth and greed. The novel is centered on how material items such as extravagant houses and cars as well as great amounts of wealth open the door to a lavish and carefree lifestyle.
