I first started listening to the Dave Matthews Band in the summer of 2000, and I knew right away that the band was something special. Since I was afraid of the impersonal large venue I never really had the desire to see DMB in concert. Finally I realized that I was missing out on an unforgettable experience, and I put my fear aside and attended a show in Raleigh, North Carolina in the summer of 2004. While I was at the show there was a feeling of togetherness and love all throughout the venue something that I had never felt before around so many people. It was as if the music had brought us all together to form one group and it did not matter if you were black, white, gay or straight we were one. According to Bormann by sharing common fantasies, a collection of individuals is transformed into a cohesive group; he calls the process symbolic convergence (Griffin p.39). The show at Raleigh was just an insight to what the future would hold for me and the experience of symbolic convergence.
