A Tale of Two CIties: The What Road Brief Sumary of the Plot The Novel A Tale of two cities begins with the line "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times" the author Charles DIckens is conveying the feeelings that are currently being felt in France and England. The events in the beginnig of hte book are relating to JArvis Lorry, who travels from LOndon to Paris. Jarvis Lorry is joined by Lucie Manette, who has just learned that her father, named Doctor Alexandre MAnette has just been released from prison after serving for 18 years. Mr. Lorry and LUcie arrive in Paris and find Doctor Manette, but his years in jail have had a significant impact on his behavoir. A man named Ernest Defarge is now taking care of Doctor MAnette. Doctor Manette's behavoir is very strange, and DIckens makes a strong poinot of this, all day Doctor MAnette sits on a cobler's bench making shoes. This bench is later destryoed, but the shoes that were made by the Doctor represent feelings of sadness that Doctor Manette is trying to hide.
