Satire in Rip Van Winkle Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the short story of “Rip Van Winkle”, author Washington Irving uses satire to express his opinion of America. This story of an old man uses examples of satire in his personality and his actions. A childhood story is not the impression that Irving intended his story to have on people. In numerous instances Irving implies that his writing has double meaning. Irving is unhappy with the way Americans are living their lives so he uses this story to teach them a lesson in an indirect way. One prominent example of literary satire is used in the description of Rip Van Winkle himself. Rip Van Winkle is living his life the way he wants, but never really living it to its fullest. He does things for others but is too lazy to do the same tasks for himself or for his family. His name alone is satire. Rip represents “R.I.P.”, which is used on tombstones of the dead to stand for “rest in peace”. It is kind of like Rip is already “resting in peace” while he is living his life because he is not doing anything to change it. He already can not change his own life even though he has not died ......
