Rappaccini's Daughter: A Closer Look at Giovanni Guasconti Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The short story “Rappaccini’s Daughter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays the quest for love of a young romantic hero named Giovanni Guasconti. As the story progresses, this Renaissance man encounters a beautiful woman, named Beatrice, and her father Dr. Rappaccini, who oversteps the boundaries of science. Before long, Giovanni discovers that Beatrice is one of her father’s experiments, and he is condemned to a solitary life in the Rappaccini’s garden forever. At first glimpse, Giovanni may seem to be an innocent man lured into Rappaccini’s evil experiment. A further examination, however, reveals Giovanni to be an arrogant scholar who is responsible for his own misfortune. Upon entering the garden and noticing the peculiarity regarding the plants and Beatrice, Giovanni insists on staying in the garden. This mistake eventually leads to his damnation. As he walks through the garden he observes “various vegetable species that the production was no longer God’s making, but the monstrous offspring of man’s depraved fancy, glowing only an evil mockery of beauty,” and “t......
